Keep the Spotlight of Attention on One Task

2 minEasy (for everyone)10 points
Start

Choose one very small task — reading one paragraph, washing one cup, organizing five papers, or listening closely to someone for two minutes.

What are the benefits of this exercise?

  • Practices focusing on one task for a fixed time
  • Builds the skill of returning attention, rather than treating a wandering mind as failure
  • Useful during reading, cooking, office work, or listening to someone

How to do this exercise

Choose a small task and turn off other notifications.

Start the task.

3

When your mind wanders, silently say: "My mind wandered."

4

Without judgment, take a deep breath. Feel your feet on the floor and your hands where they are, say out loud what you're doing — e.g. "I am washing the cup" — then return to the task through sight, touch, or words.

5

When time is up, stop and simply notice how many times you returned.
