10 Ways to Reduce Screen Addiction

10 views7/24/2026

These days, plenty of people spend hour after hour staring at screens. Screen addiction severely harms many people's personal, family, and social lives. But many of us don't know how to break free of it.

  1. Become aware of your addiction and accept it as a problem: Track your screen time and identify the physical (eye strain, disturbed sleep), mental (anxiety, mood swings), and social (reduced participation in activities) problems it causes.
  2. Set a clear goal: Considering work, leisure, and necessary communication, decide what a reasonable amount of screen time is for you.
  3. Set clear boundaries: Keep screen-free times (such as the first hour after waking and the last hour before sleep), keep the bedroom and dining table screen-free, and take a 5–10 minute break every hour.
  4. Design a healthy digital environment: Keep devices out of reach, delete unnecessary apps, and turn off unnecessary notifications.
  5. Balance online and offline: Prioritise face-to-face connection and real-life interaction; spend time on offline hobbies such as reading, painting, or gardening.
  6. Build a routine: Set specific times to check email and social media.
  7. Set guidelines for children: If you are a parent, set clear screen-time limits for your children and encourage outdoor play.
  8. Keep learning: The more you know about the effects of excessive screen time, the better you can tackle the problem.
  9. Reassess regularly: Review your screen-time habits and adjust your strategies as needed.
  10. Seek professional advice: If screen addiction seriously affects your life, consider consulting a mental health professional.
